Beyond the Chair: Rethinking the Salon Client in 2025

|Nick Mirabella

Here's the thing most salon owners get completely wrong about clients.

You think your client is the person sitting in your chair. The one booking appointments and spending money. And yeah, that's true. But you're only seeing half the picture.

I've been coaching salon owners for years now, and here's what I've learned: you actually have TWO sets of clients. And if you ignore one of them, you'll struggle to grow no matter how hard you work.

Your Real Clients: The People in the Chair AND Behind It

Every successful salon owner I work with in the Level Up Academy has this lightbulb moment where they realize their team IS their client too.

Think about it. Your stylists, your front desk team, your assistants - they're not just employees. They're internal clients with their own needs, goals, and reasons for staying or leaving. And when they feel valued and supported, they stick around longer, sell more services, and create a better experience for your paying clients.

This is straight from the E-Myth playbook. Working ON your business means seeing your team as clients who deserve the same attention and care you give to the people in your chairs.

I've seen salons increase retention rates by 20% just by making this one mindset shift. It's not rocket science, but most owners miss it completely.

Marketing Works for Both Sides

Here's something that'll blow your mind: your marketing isn't just about attracting guests. It's about attracting and keeping great stylists too.

Your social media? That's not just a booking tool. It's your culture wall and your recruitment billboard all rolled into one. When you share your salon's vibe, spotlight your team's wins, and show the growth opportunities you offer, you're marketing to BOTH sides of your business.

And here's what I like about this approach - it's a win-win for everybody. Your current team feels appreciated, potential stylists see what they could be part of, and your clients see a salon that cares about its people.

Authenticity Beats Perfection Every Time

One of the biggest mistakes I see salon owners make is trying to put on this perfect, polished image online. Here's the deal: that doesn't work anymore.

If you love horseback riding, Pilates, or whatever else lights you up - share it. These personal touches create connection points for both your guests AND your team. People want to work with and get their hair done by real humans, not robots.

This ties right back to Stephen Covey's 7 Habits - begin with the end in mind. What do you want your salon to feel like? What kind of people do you want to attract? When you show the real you, you attract the right clients and the right stylists who fit your culture.

How to Put This Into Practice

Audit your marketing. Look at your social media and website. Are you speaking only to guests? Are you showing your team and the culture they'd be joining?

Invest in your team like they're clients. Use EOS tools like Accountability Charts and Rocks to create clear roles and growth paths. Treat your stylists like internal clients with their own needs and goals.

Be intentional about delegation. Use Dan Martell's Buy Back Your Time approach and delegate marketing tasks that showcase both your services AND your team's personalities.

I've seen salons go from struggling to fill chairs to having waiting lists just by shifting their mindset this way. It's not about working harder. It's about working smarter and building a brand that works for you 24/7.

Here's what's really cool about this: when you treat your team like clients, they start treating your actual clients better. It creates this ripple effect that touches every part of your business.

And if you're thinking "Nick, this sounds great but I don't have time for all this" - that's exactly why you need to start. When you invest in your internal clients, they become your biggest advocates for bringing in new business and new talent.
