Here's the thing about salon owners who actually succeed long-term. They all figured out one simple truth: you have a gift, and that gift is exactly what your business needs to thrive.
I've been coaching salon owners for over 30 years now, and I see this pattern over and over. The owners who break through aren't the ones with perfect technique or flawless business plans. They're the ones who believe in their unique gift and build systems around it.
If you're feeling stuck right now or like you're constantly starting over, listen to me. Your struggles aren't signs you should quit. They might actually be pointing you straight toward your biggest strengths.
Your Messy Start Is Actually Your Superpower
Most salon owners I work with think their early mistakes are holding them back. But here's what I've learned after seeing real salon turnarounds happen dozens of times: those messy beginnings are where your real gifts get forged.
When I was building my first location, nothing went according to plan. We had team drama, slow seasons, pricing mistakes that killed our margins. But you know what? Those challenges forced me to get crystal clear on what I was actually good at and what my salon needed to survive.
Ask yourself this: What parts of running your salon light you up? What do clients come to you for over and over? What does your team always ask you about? That's where your gift lives.
And so here's what I like to do with my Level Up Academy members. I have them identify their unique strengths first, then we build systems around those strengths using the E-Myth framework. You've got to work ON your business, not just IN it. When you dial in systems that support what you're naturally good at, you stop firefighting and start leading.
Stop Chasing What "Should" Work and Focus on What Actually Moves the Needle
One of the biggest traps I see salon owners fall into is what I call the "technician trap." You do what you think you should do instead of what actually drives results.
Here's what I mean. I had a client spending 10 hours a week creating social media content with basically zero return. After we did a Buy Back Your Time audit, we shifted her focus to SEO that actually works and targeted local ads. Result? 20% increase in new bookings within three months.
That's the difference between busy work and needle-moving activities. Your gift isn't just your technical skills behind the chair. It's your ability to see what your business actually needs and focus your energy there.
And so when I'm coaching owners on this, I always ask: What activities in your salon directly bring in revenue? What tasks drain your energy without moving you forward? Once you know the difference, you can start managing your energy instead of just managing your time.
Build a Team That Amplifies Your Gift, Not Buries It
Your gift means nothing if it gets buried under daily chaos. That's why I use EOS principles with my coaching clients. We create Accountability Charts, set clear Rocks (quarterly goals), and run Level 10 Meetings that actually work.
Here's the thing about leadership in salons. Bad culture costs you serious money in turnover and lost productivity. But when you get your team aligned and create win-win situations, your gift gets amplified through every person in your salon.
When I was running multiple locations, I learned this the hard way. If your systems aren't solid and your team isn't bought in, you're the only one carrying the weight. That's not sustainable, and it definitely doesn't scale.
The 7 Habits framework really nails this with "begin with the end in mind." You need to know where you're going and communicate that vision so your team can help you get there.
Stop Chasing Perfection and Start Building Your Legacy
Every salon owner I've coached has faced moments of doubt, burnout, or total confusion. The difference between the ones who succeed and the ones who don't? They keep showing up, they learn from mistakes, and they build systems that support their unique gift.
Your salon shouldn't just be a job. It should be a platform that changes lives. Yours, your team's, your clients'. That's what happens when you stop trying to be perfect and start being intentional about what you're building.
And so if you're ready to move beyond being just a technician and actually build a salon that runs without you, you need coaching that meets you where you are. That's exactly what we do in the Level Up Academy. We help you identify your gift, build systems around it, and create a business that actually works for your life.
Because here's what I know after 30 years in this industry: you already have everything you need to succeed. You just need the right framework to make it happen.
