How to Build Wealth as a Salon Owner, Even If You're Starting with Nothing

|Nick Mirabella

Look, I've been coaching salon owners for years and I see the same pattern over and over. You're working 60+ hours a week, bringing in decent revenue, but your bank account still looks pathetic. Sound familiar?

Here's the thing: wealth isn't about how much you make. It's about what you do with what you make.

I don't care if you're opening your first salon or rebuilding after everything fell apart. These are the exact steps I've walked hundreds of salon owners through. And they work. But you have to actually do them.

Wealth Is a Ratio, Not Just Income

I've worked with salon owners making $4,000 a month who felt broke, and others pulling $2,500 who felt wealthy. What's the difference? One group spends less than they earn. The other doesn't.

When you're caught in what Michael Gerber calls the technician trap in The E-Myth, working in your salon all day and spending every dollar you bring in, you're stuck. You know what I'm talking about. You're the best stylist in your salon, but you can't figure out why you're fully booked but still broke.

The fix starts with your mindset. Stop identifying as a "struggling stylist" and start seeing yourself as a wealth builder. This isn't fluffy mindset stuff. This is the foundation for everything else.

Crush High-Interest Debt. It's Stealing Your Future

I watch salon owners finance everything. Equipment, renovations, even their lunch on credit cards. When you owe money at 20% interest or more, you are literally paying for your own stress.

Here's what I like to do: attack your highest interest debt first. Use Dan Martell's replacement ladder from Buy Back Your Time. Delegate what you can, free up your time, then use that time to make more money and pay down debt faster.

And stop rewarding yourself with lifestyle upgrades every time your income goes up. That's lifestyle creep and it kills wealth faster than anything else.

Build an Emergency Fund Before You Invest

I know you want to jump into investments or new marketing strategies. But here's what you need first: a safety net. Start with $1,000. Then build up to covering 3-6 months of your living expenses.

This fund does two things. It reduces your anxiety and gives you the freedom to take calculated risks in your business. When you have that buffer, you can focus on growth instead of survival.

Live Lean to Grow Fast

Can you go 30 days spending only on essentials? I call this a Buy Nothing Challenge, and it's part of my 30-day free challenge. Bring your lunch to the salon instead of eating out. Cancel those subscriptions you forgot about. Drive a paid-off car instead of financing a new one.

I ask salon owners all the time: "Do you want to look rich, or do you want to actually be rich?" There's a big difference. Real wealth comes from smart choices, not flashy spending.

Automate Your Investments and Income Growth

Setting up systems is part of running a salon business well. That's an EOS principle I lean on heavily in my coaching. The same goes for your money. Automate a transfer of at least 15% of your pre-tax income into an investment or business education fund.

If you're still in hustle mode, put in extra hours while you build your foundation. But don't burn out. Focus on high-value tasks, those $1000 tasks that only you can do.

Your goal is to build a salon that runs without you. That's how your income becomes more passive and your wealth grows without constant sweat equity. But it's a completely different set of skills than being behind the chair.

This Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Building wealth as a salon owner requires changing how you think about money, controlling your spending, and setting up smart systems in both your business and personal life.

You know what separates the salon owners who actually build wealth from the ones who stay stuck? They get help. They invest in themselves. They figure out where their money is actually going and they make a plan.

In the Level Up Academy, I dive deep into these principles and help salon owners create a clear path from paycheck to profit to wealth. If you're ready to stop surviving and start thriving, it's time to level up.
