Speak Like a Leader: Communication Secrets for Salon Owners

|Nick Mirabella

Here's the thing - if you want to grow your salon and actually lead your team, you've got to master how you communicate. Period.

In my years of coaching salon owners, I see this pattern over and over: the ones who struggle with team drama, stylists leaving, and slow growth all have one thing in common. They're missing clear, confident communication that actually connects.

And so today, I'm going to break down exactly how to speak like a salon owner who leads with authority and gets real results.

Use Your Nerves as Fuel, Not a Flaw

Let me be straight with you. Standing up to share your vision or coach your stylists can make your stomach flip. I get it. But here's what I know after decades of doing this - nerves aren't a sign of weakness. They mean you care deeply.

When I was building my first location, I'd get that nervous energy right before every team meeting. Instead of fighting it, I started changing my mindset. I told myself, "I'm excited to serve my team and clients today." That shift turned fear into fuel.

This goes back to Stephen Covey's 7 Habits - being proactive, not reactive. You control your mindset before you even say a word. Starting your talks with gratitude like "I get to do this" keeps your words genuine and focused on service.

Speak Only From What You Know

Your authority as a salon owner comes from experience, not guessing. You can't wing it when your team is counting on you. Every time you communicate - in a team meeting, a client consultation, or even online - show up prepared.

Here's what I like to do: outline your key points before speaking. Think of it like your salon's SOPs. You wouldn't leave a service half-finished, so don't leave your message half-baked.

Prep your introduction, your main message, and your call to action. Practice it out loud. Use a mirror or have a trusted colleague give you feedback. This discipline builds confidence and credibility.

Use EOS to Structure Your Communication

In the salons I've coached using the Entrepreneurial Operating System, communication improved dramatically once owners embraced tools like Rocks and Level 10 meetings. When you set clear priorities and have regular, structured team meetings, your messages become focused and purposeful.

When you lead meetings with an agenda and keep everyone accountable, you're not just talking - you're driving traction. This clarity reduces miscommunication and team drama. If your salon doesn't have a system for meetings and priorities, that's where I would start.

Listen More Than You Talk

Strong communication isn't just about how well you speak. It's also about how well you listen. I've sat in hundreds of coaching sessions where owners miss the real issues because they were too busy talking or defending their point.

When you listen carefully - whether to your team or your clients - you gain insight that helps you lead better. This is part of working ON your business, not just IN it, like Michael Gerber teaches in the E-Myth. The technician trap is real: owners get stuck doing hair instead of leading strategically.

Be Clear, Direct, and Consistent

Here's what actually works: be clear, direct, and consistent with your communication. Vague or wishy-washy messages cause confusion and frustration. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and follow up.

Consistency builds trust over time. Your team should never have to guess what you want or expect. When you set clear expectations and stick to them, your salon runs smoother. Your average ticket, retention rates, and rebooking will thank you.

If you're struggling with team accountability, this is exactly what we dial in through the Level Up Academy. It's a completely different set of skills going from stylist to owner, and most people never get the training they need.

Your Message Matters Online Too

Communication isn't just face-to-face anymore. Your online presence reflects your leadership. I help salon owners with salon SEO that actually fills chairs all the time, and here's the thing: your website, social media, and online reviews speak volumes about how you lead.

Write your online content with the same clarity and authority you use in the salon. Show up as a confident leader who cares about clients and the team. That builds trust and attracts the right people.

You know what I see happen? Owners post every day but still have empty chairs because their message isn't connecting. If that sounds familiar, you need to read why you're posting every day but still have empty chairs.

Lead With Your Words

Communication is the backbone of leadership in this industry. If you want to grow your salon, your words must connect, inspire, and drive action. Use your nerves as fuel, prep your messages, listen more than you talk, and lead with clarity.

Here's the reality - most salon owners never get proper training on the business side. They're amazing stylists who learned to cut and color, but nobody taught them how to lead, communicate, or run a profitable business.

That's exactly why I created the Level Up Academy. It's designed to help salon owners like you build a salon that runs without you and grows profitably. If you're ready to stop winging it and start leading like the CEO you are, apply here.

Because at the end of the day, it's a win-win for everybody when you show up as the leader your team and clients deserve.
