You opened your salon, built your client base, and filled your schedule. You've got the skills, the space, and the team you once dreamed about. So why do you still feel like something is missing?
I've seen this play out hundreds of times in my 30 years running salons and coaching owners. Here's the thing no one tells you: success does not automatically bring happiness.
Happiness isn't luck. It's a skill you can develop, just like mastering a new technique or building a marketing plan. And so understanding these three levels of happiness will help you stop chasing short-term highs and start building something deeper and more fulfilling.
Level 1: Rockstar Happiness (Pleasure-Based)
This is the first level most salon owners chase. It's the rush you feel when you book a high-dollar color correction, get reposted by a big brand, or open your salon doors for the first time. That dopamine hit feels amazing, you know? I remember building my first location and feeling that addictive thrill every time I hit a new revenue goal or brought in a new client.
But here's the problem: this kind of happiness doesn't last. It's temporary fuel. If your mood depends on the next big win, you're setting yourself up for burnout. One of the biggest mistakes I see is salon owners tying their self-worth to these wins.
The E-Myth principle of working ON your business, not just IN it, is key here. Celebrate your successes, but don't let them define you. You need a stronger emotional foundation than chasing wins.
Level 2: Flow Happiness (Engagement-Based)
This level happens when you're fully immersed in your work. Think about those moments mid-service when you lose track of time, or when everything clicks while creating content or coaching your team. This is flow happiness - you're engaged, focused, and energized.
Here's what I like to do: I teach salon owners to create systems and processes that allow them to get into this flow regularly. Using EOS tools like Rocks and L10 meetings helps you stay on track with what matters most, so you spend your time doing work that engages you. This level feels more sustainable because it's about being present in the moment and enjoying the work itself, not just the results.
Level 3: Purpose Happiness (Meaning-Based)
The deepest level of happiness comes from purpose. This is when your salon is more than a business - it's a legacy. You're not just serving clients or managing stylists, you're building something that matters long-term.
In my coaching, I help owners see beyond daily operations to their bigger vision. This ties directly to the 7 Habits concept of beginning with the end in mind. When you lead with purpose, your happiness doesn't depend on the next client or paycheck. It comes from knowing your salon is making a positive impact on your team, clients, and community.
Reaching this level means you've moved out of the technician trap and truly work on your business. You delegate tasks using frameworks like the Level Up Academy system, use accountability charts, and build a culture that supports everyone's growth. That's when happiness becomes a steady state, not a rollercoaster.
Why Understanding These Levels Matters
Every salon owner I've coached has faced these challenges. The key is recognizing which level you're stuck in and then using proven frameworks to move up. If you're caught chasing rockstar happiness, start building systems and habits that create flow. If you're in flow but feel empty, get clear on your purpose and vision.
And so here's the thing: happiness in this business is a muscle. It takes work, reflection, and leadership. But when you get it right, you not only grow your salon, you build a life you love.
If you're ready to stop chasing temporary highs and start building real fulfillment in your salon business, apply to work with me directly. Because going from stylist to owner is a completely different set of skills, and most people try to figure it out alone.
Don't do that. Start with my 30-day free challenge and see what's possible when you have the right frameworks and support.
