How Do You Stop Losing Clients to Cheaper Salons?

|Nick Mirabella

A client you have had for two years tells you she found a salon that does her color for $40 less. She is sorry, but she has to make the switch. You smile, wish her well, and then spend the rest of the day wondering if you need to lower your prices.

Do not do it.

The Real Problem: You Are Competing on Price Instead of Value

Here is the truth about price shoppers: they will always find someone cheaper. If you compete on price, you will always lose. There is always a cosmetology school, a suite stylist working out of their home, or a discount chain that will undercut you. That is not a race you can win.

The salons that thrive long-term do not compete on price. They compete on value. And value is not just about the quality of the haircut. It is about the experience, the expertise, the relationship, and the results.

The clients who leave for cheaper salons were never your ideal clients. They were transactional clients. They came to you for a service. They did not come to you for a transformation. And that is okay. Let them go. Your job is to attract and retain clients who value what you do and are willing to pay for it.

If you want to understand the financial side of this, read my post on why you are fully booked but still broke. Competing on price is one of the biggest reasons salons stay stuck below seven figures.

The Fix: The Premium Client Attraction System

Step 1: Define Your Ideal Client

Get specific. Who is the exact person you want to serve? What do they do for work? What do they value? What does their life look like? What are their hair goals? When you know exactly who you are talking to, your marketing becomes magnetic to that person and invisible to everyone else.

Step 2: Build Your Expert Positioning

Premium clients pay premium prices for experts, not generalists. What is your specialty? What are you the best at in your market? Lived-in color? Curly hair? Extensions? Bridal? Pick a lane and own it. Become the go-to expert for that specific thing in your area.

Step 3: Elevate the Experience

Premium clients expect a premium experience. Audit every touchpoint of your client journey. The booking process. The confirmation. The greeting. The consultation. The service. The retail recommendation. The rebooking. The follow-up. Every single touchpoint should communicate that you are worth every dollar you charge.

Step 4: Collect and Showcase Social Proof

Premium clients trust other premium clients. Your Google reviews, your before-and-after photos, and your client testimonials are your most powerful marketing tools. Build a system to consistently collect five-star reviews and showcase transformation results.

Step 5: Stop Discounting

Every time you offer a discount, you train your clients to wait for the sale. You also attract price-sensitive clients who will leave the moment someone offers a better deal. Replace discounts with value-adds. Instead of $20 off, offer a complimentary deep conditioning treatment. The perceived value is the same, but you are not devaluing your work.

The System: The Premium Positioning Framework

The goal is to build a salon that premium clients seek out, not stumble upon. You are the expert in your niche. Your experience is exceptional. Your social proof is undeniable. And your prices reflect the value you deliver.

If you want to make sure your social media is attracting the right clients, that is the next piece of this puzzle. And if you want to understand how to price your services correctly, that is the financial foundation of premium positioning.
