Why Is Your Salon Invisible When Clients Ask AI for Recommendations?

|Nick Mirabella

Listen up. In my 30 years running salons and coaching owners, I've seen marketing trends come and go. But here's what's happening right now that most salon owners are missing: clients aren't just googling anymore. They're asking AI for recommendations.

And if your salon isn't dialed in for this shift, you're invisible.

Your Clients Changed How They Search

Remember when clients typed "hair salon near me" and scrolled through pages of results? Those days are over. Now people are asking ChatGPT and Google's AI assistant specific questions like "Who's the best balayage expert in Denver?" or "Where can I get a precision cut that actually looks good?"

Here's the thing: AI doesn't give people a list of 10 options. It gives one clear recommendation. If that's not your salon, you just lost a client who was ready to book.

From SEO to Answer Engine Optimization

Most salon owners are still playing the old SEO game. And yes, ranking on Google still matters. But it's not enough anymore.

I call this new game Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO. It's about making sure AI tools pick your salon as the most trusted, reliable answer. The salon owners I coach who get this right? They don't just survive slow seasons. They stay fully booked year round.

So how do you win at AEO? It's not about flashy websites or social media followers. You need to build digital trust through:

  • Complete, accurate local listings everywhere
  • Consistent five-star reviews that prove your reputation
  • Clear service descriptions using the exact words clients use

I've seen salons double their bookings just by cleaning up these basics. It's not sexy work, but it's the work that pays.

Why Good Salons Get Ignored by AI

I'm going to be straight with you. Most salon owners are stuck doing what worked 10 years ago: pretty websites, social media ads, constant discounting. AI doesn't care about any of that.

AI cares about trust and clarity. And here's what kills me: I see salons with amazing stylists and 20 years in business getting passed over because they have inconsistent business info online or spotty Google reviews.

You know what one of my Level Up Academy members told me last month? She said, "Nick, I finally understand why potential clients were finding my competitor instead of me. My Google My Business hadn't been updated in two years, and half my reviews mentioned problems I fixed ages ago."

That's the reality. If your digital presence isn't speaking AI's language, you're invisible to the clients who need you most.

How to Start Winning AI Recommendations

First things first: get your local listings consistent. Your salon name, address, phone, and hours need to match everywhere online. I know it sounds basic, but this one thing trips up more salons than you'd think.

Next, you need a system for reviews. Not asking once and hoping. A real system where your team consistently asks happy clients to share their experience. Remember what I teach about systems in the E-Myth framework: systems over people. Build the process so it happens without you.

Then update your website and Google profile with the exact language clients use when they talk to AI. Words like "balayage specialist," "precision cutting expert," "color correction master." This helps AI understand what you're actually good at.

And here's what I like to do with my coaching clients: we use the Buy Back Your Time framework to delegate the $10 tasks like posting on social media so you can focus on the $1000 tasks like strategy and client experience.

The Bottom Line

I've watched this play out hundreds of times. Salons that adapt to how clients actually find businesses today? They grow. Salons stuck in 2015 marketing? They fade away quietly.

It's that simple.

Stop guessing what might work and start building your salon's digital trust today. Because every day you wait is another day potential clients are asking AI for recommendations and getting your competitor's name instead of yours.
