Calculate the true cost of every service on your menu before you touch a single price. That one number, what a haircut, a color, or a blowout actually costs you in payroll, product, and time, decides whether your salon in Tacoma makes money or just stays busy.
Most owners never run that math. They set prices off what the salon down the street charges, or off what feels fair, and then wonder why a full book still leaves them stressed about payroll on Friday. Before I was ever behind a chair, I was a Marine, and the habit of tracking every number instead of guessing came from that, not from the salon floor. It is the same habit that separates a salon that survives from one that actually pays its owner.
This is where Profit and Protection comes in, one of the Five Forces I teach salon owners across the country, including here in Washington. It is the discipline of knowing your real revenue, pricing for actual profit instead of hope, and then protecting that profit once you have it. Everything below builds off that one idea.
How do I know if my Tacoma salon is actually profitable?
You know by running true cost per service, not by looking at your bank balance on a good week. Revenue tells you what came in. It does not tell you what you kept. A salon can have a packed schedule and still lose money on half its services if labor and product costs are eating the ticket price alive. Pull your numbers by service category, not just by month, and you will usually find at least one service you are pricing at a loss without realizing it.
Why does my salon feel busy but the bank account says otherwise?
Because busy and profitable are two different measurements, and most pricing gets built around the first one. A full chair covers payroll for the day. It does not automatically cover product cost, retail loss, rent, insurance, and the owner's own paycheck. Protection means building a price that accounts for all of it, not just enough to keep the lights on until next week.
What should I actually charge for each service?
You charge based on true cost plus a real margin, not based on what feels comfortable to say out loud to a client. Start with time in the chair, product used, and a fair share of your fixed costs, then add the margin you need to actually run the business. Owners who raise prices this way, backed by a number, hold the line with confidence. Owners who raise prices because they feel guilty about being cheap usually cave the first time a client pushes back.
How do I protect profit once I finally have it?
You protect it by watching it on a schedule, weekly or monthly, not by checking in once a year when taxes are due. Profit leaks quietly. A supply order that creeps up two percent a month, a service that has not been repriced in three years, a retail line that sits on the shelf instead of selling, none of it shows up as a crisis. It shows up as a slow erosion until you look up and the margin is gone. Protection is the ongoing habit of catching that erosion early.
Is this something a coach can actually fix, or is it just my market?
It is rarely the market. I have worked hands-on with over 200 salon owners directly and helped thousands more through my content and programs, and the pattern holds regardless of city or state: the salons struggling on profit are almost never struggling because of location. They are struggling because pricing was never built on real numbers in the first place. Fix the numbers and the market stops being the excuse.
