Is Salon Coaching Worth It? Here's How to Know If You're Ready.

I get this question at least three times a week. Some version of "Nick, is coaching actually worth it, or is it just another thing I'll spend money on and never use?"

Fair question. Let me give you a straight answer.

Salon coaching is worth it if you're willing to do the work. It's not worth it if you're looking for someone to hand you a magic formula while you keep doing the same things you've been doing for the last five years.

I've been in this industry for 28 years. I've coached over 200 salon owners. And I can tell you exactly who gets massive ROI from coaching and who wastes their money.

The Salon Owner Who Gets 10x Return

She's the one making $300K to $500K in revenue but only taking home $40K. She knows something is broken. She can feel it every Sunday night when the anxiety kicks in about payroll. She's tired of being the best stylist in her own salon while also being the worst-paid person in the building.

I worked with a salon owner in Charlotte, NC who was doing $420K in revenue and taking home $38K. Within six months of coaching, she restructured her pricing, fixed her commission model, and started taking home $9,200 a month. Same team. Same location. Different systems.

That's when coaching is worth it.

The Salon Owner Who Wastes Their Money

She's the one who signs up, shows up to the first two calls, then disappears because "things got crazy at the salon." She wants results but won't block 90 minutes a week for her own business development. She asks for advice, gets it, then argues about why it won't work in her market.

I'm not going to sugarcoat this. If that's you right now, don't apply. Save your money. Come back when the pain gets bad enough that you're actually ready to change.

5 Signs You're Ready for Coaching

  • You're working 50+ hours a week and still can't pay yourself consistently. This isn't a hustle problem. It's a model problem. And you can't see the model when you're stuck inside it.
  • You've tried to fix things on your own and keep hitting the same walls. You've watched the YouTube videos. You've read the books. You've maybe even taken a course. But nothing sticks because you had no one holding you accountable.
  • You know what you should be doing but you're not doing it. The gap between knowing and doing is where coaching lives. That gap costs most salon owners $50K to $100K a year in lost profit.
  • You're ready to hear hard truths. I'm a former Marine. I'm not going to tell you what you want to hear. I'm going to tell you what you need to hear. If you want someone to validate your excuses, I'm not your guy.
  • You want to build a business, not just have a job. There's nothing wrong with being a solo stylist who rents a suite. But if you have a team, a lease, and overhead, you need to run this thing like an actual business.

The Math on ROI

Let's keep this simple. The average salon owner I work with finds $3,000 to $5,000 in monthly profit they didn't know was there within the first 90 days. That's not from getting more clients. That's from fixing the leaks in their current operation.

A salon owner in Denver was giving away $2,800 a month in services she wasn't tracking. Free add-ons, undercharged color corrections, "friend pricing" she forgot to update. We found it in week two. Fixed it in week three. That's $33,600 a year she was leaving on the table.

Another owner in Tampa had her commission structure set up so that her top producer was actually costing her money on color services. The more that stylist worked, the more the owner lost. We rebuilt the compensation model in one session. Net gain: $4,100 per month.

Coaching doesn't cost you money. Not coaching costs you money. Every month you wait is another month of profit walking out the door.

What Level Up Academy Actually Gives You

This isn't a course you watch alone at midnight. Level Up Academy is a 52-week program with live weekly coaching calls, hot seats, strategy sessions, and real accountability. You get monthly profit reports, marketing performance tracking, custom SEO plans, and training systems for every position in your salon.

It's built on my 5 Forces framework, which covers everything from your business model to your leadership systems. Most coaching programs only address one or two areas. That's why they fail. You can't fix your marketing if your pricing is broken. You can't fix your team if your culture is toxic. Everything connects.

If you're ready to stop guessing and start building, apply for Level Up Academy here.
