What Are the Advanced SEO Moves That Actually Help a Salon Outrank Competitors?

|Nick Mirabella

Look, if you want to grow your salon, showing up on Google isn't optional anymore. And here's the thing - just having a nice website and a handful of reviews won't cut it.

I'm going to be straight with you. In my 30 years running salons and coaching hundreds of owners through the Level Up Academy, I've seen this play out over and over. The salons that dominate search results are doing the hard, consistent work that most owners skip.

Advanced SEO isn't just claiming your Google Business Profile and calling it a day. It's about building a system around local citations, managing reviews strategically, earning local backlinks, and tracking your progress every single month.

Why Most Salons Stay Stuck on Page Two or Three

Here's what actually works. I coached a salon owner in a super competitive market who was stuck at position seven for "hair salon near me." Their salon looked amazing, the team was solid, and the work was top quality. But they were completely invisible online.

Meanwhile, a salon down the street with average photos and outdated branding was dominating the top three spots.

What was the difference? The salons ranking higher were doing the little things consistently. They had clean local citations everywhere, a system to collect reviews, and local backlinks from trusted community sites. They also tracked their SEO metrics every month like clockwork.

This wasn't luck. It was strategy.

Building SEO Into Your Operating System

When I was building my first location, SEO wasn't even on my radar. Today, I teach salon owners to use frameworks like EOS to build accountability around SEO tasks. Just like Rocks and Level 10 meetings keep your team focused on priorities, you need to treat salon SEO as an ongoing part of your business operations.

Here's what I like to do. Assign clear roles for who manages citations, who handles review responses, and who tracks rankings and traffic. And so many salon owners think SEO is a set-it-and-forget-it task. It's not. It's a process that requires monthly attention.

For example, you want to audit your local citations to make sure your name, address, and phone number are consistent across every directory. Inconsistent citations confuse Google and hurt your rankings.

Next, you need a system to collect reviews consistently. I recommend automating review requests after every appointment and always responding to reviews professionally. This improves your star rating and engagement signals, which Google rewards.

Earn Local Backlinks and Study Your Competitors

Local backlinks are another powerful but often overlooked ranking factor. Community websites, local business associations, or event sponsorships can provide backlinks that show Google your salon is a trusted local business. I've seen salons break into the map pack after gaining just a handful of high-quality backlinks.

And here's something most owners never do - study your competitors' SEO moves. Look at which keywords they rank for, where their backlinks come from, and how they manage their online presence. This competitive research helps you uncover opportunities to improve your own strategy.

Track Your Progress and Adjust

Finally, tracking your SEO metrics every month is non-negotiable. You can't improve what you don't measure. Monitor your search rankings, website traffic, and review volume regularly. This data helps you see what's working and where to double down.

I've coached many salon owners who started with poor online visibility and by following these moves, broke into the top three spots in less than six months. Their increased visibility led to a 20-30% boost in new client bookings and a healthier bottom line.

If you want to grow your salon and dominate your local market, start treating SEO like a system. Use frameworks like EOS to build accountability, create clear processes, and measure your results. Stop guessing and start doing what actually works.

The truth is, it's a completely different set of skills going from stylist to owner. And SEO is just one piece of the puzzle. If you're ready to get serious about SEO and overall salon growth, explore the Level Up Academy where I teach these frameworks in detail.
