Is Your Salon Website Speaking a Language AI Cannot Understand?

|Nick Mirabella

Here's the thing - if you think having a pretty website with good Google reviews is enough to bring in clients, you're already behind.

I've been coaching salon owners for decades now, and I'm watching something big happen. AI tools like ChatGPT are becoming the new gatekeepers for how people find salons. And here's what most owners don't get: AI doesn't browse your website like a human does. It reads and interprets your content to decide if your salon is worth recommending.

If your website isn't built for AI to understand, you're invisible to a growing number of potential clients who are asking AI where to get their hair done.

Most salon coaches are still stuck teaching tactics from 2019. They're obsessing over keywords and backlinks like that's the whole game. I've tested those methods with my own salons and coaching clients, and here's the truth: the game has completely shifted.

Why Most Salon Websites Fail AI Recommendations

When I built my first salon back in the 90s, word of mouth ruled everything. Today, your website needs to speak a clear, logical language that machines can understand, not just look pretty.

I see this play out with salon owners all the time. They throw money at flashy websites filled with beautiful photos and vague phrases like "we offer great haircuts and color." AI tools can't figure out what makes you unique or why clients should pick you over the competition.

AI is looking for precise, verifiable information. It wants clear answers about what services you actually offer, why you're the best choice, and proof to back that up. If your site doesn't deliver this, you're cutting yourself off from a huge opportunity.

What Your Salon Website Needs to Speak AI's Language

Clear, Specific Service Descriptions: Use terms your clients and AI recognize naturally. Instead of vague phrases like "hair color," say "balayage highlights," "men's fade haircut," or "keratin smoothing treatment." This clarity helps AI understand exactly what you provide.

Structured Content That Answers Questions: AI looks for straightforward answers. Include things like pricing ranges, service duration, and frequently asked questions. When you do this, you're working ON your business, not just IN it - a key principle from the E-Myth that I teach in my masterclasses.

Consistent Location and Contact Details: Make sure your address, phone number, and hours are consistent across your website and all online profiles. This builds trust with AI and search engines.

Authority-Building Proof: Client testimonials, before-and-after photos, and links to press or awards all show AI that you're credible. This is part of building what I call your salon's reputation and trustworthiness online.

Fast, Mobile-Friendly Design: AI favors sites that load quickly and work well on phones. This is non-negotiable if you want to compete in today's market.

How To Start Speaking AI's Language Today

Start by auditing your website content with fresh eyes. I recommend using a time audit - a concept from Buy Back Your Time - to carve out focused blocks just for improving your site. Read every service description and ask yourself: Would an AI assistant understand exactly what we offer? Is the information clear and specific?

Next, use your salon's website strategy to assign one person the task of regularly updating and improving the content. This keeps it sharp and aligned with your vision. I see too many owners trying to do this themselves while juggling daily operations - that's the technician trap Michael Gerber warns about in the E-Myth.

And here's what I like to do with my Level Up Academy clients: I have them focus on SEO that actually works in 2024, not the outdated stuff most agencies are still pushing. It's about creating content that serves both humans AND machines.

Remember, AI isn't a trend you can ignore. It's part of the new foundation for how salon owners grow their business and attract clients. If your website isn't built for AI, you're leaving money on the table every single day.

Here's the bottom line: your competitors are already showing up when clients ask AI for recommendations. If you're not, you need to fix this now.
